Specifications:
Specifications:The configuration of this system is as follows: Energy generated from the wind turbine passes through the ARE Voltage Clamp. The Voltage Clamp, in turn, feeds both the Windy Boy inverter(s) and the diversion load. The WB inverter then connects into the AC breaker box. Use of #10 wire is recommended for these connections. The utility company or an inspector may insist on having fused disconnect switches on the DC and/or AC sides. These are not necessary, but if you are required to use them, use at least 15 amp fuses.Slip Rings:
ARE110 and ARE442 wind generators use slip rings. Slip rings are a device which allows the turbine to yaw (turn on its vertical axis to face the wind) without twisting the electrical output wires from the machine.
Battery-less Grid-Connect Systems:
The ARE grid connection system consists of four main parts:
Wind turbine (ARE110 or ARE442) with a very large swept area, optimized for energy production in low wind sites. (See above for specs.)
The SMA Sunny/Windy Boy inverter is UL listed for direct grid connection. One (1) WB 3300U inverter is used with the ARE110 and two (2) WB 6000U inverters for the ARE442. Maximum AC power output is 3,300 watts and 6,000 watts for the WB 3300U and WB 6000U, respectively. Peak efficiency is 93%-94.4%, and the "Total Harmonic Distortion" is less than 4% (the best in the industry). Its power factor is unity. Visit www.sma-america.com/windyboy.html for more information.
The ARE Voltage Clamp is designed to protect the inverter(s) from over-voltage damage, when the utility power grid goes down. The Voltage Clamp has a rectifier to convert the turbine's AC power to DC for the Windy Boy inverter. It has a brake switch to stop the machine for servicing. It also has a control which will shunt energy to a diversion load when the voltage exceeds a safe limit for the inverter. Over-voltage can occur if the utility grid is down and the Windy Boy inverter is not putting the available power into the grid.
The diversion load (a.k.a dump load) is a resistor element which converts excess energy into heat, which can be used for space heating. It is only activated when the grid is not available, or when the generator is producing more power than the Windy Boy inverter can safely handle.
